PIETERMARITZBURG – The Shoprite Food Security Index shows food security levels in South Africa are at their lowest since 2012.
The country’s biggest retailer recommends that government must remove value-added tax on protein-rich foods with the aim to improve food security.

The National Treasury already zero-rates many basic foods, including brown bread, maize meal, samp, milk powder, pilchards, rice, fruit, vegetables, milk and eggs.
